She obviously had been discussing this with her peer group, her friends, and the possibility of this happening – which seems so real to her young mind, scared the dickens out of her – so much so that she ended up with a terrible migraine through fear.
She had heard about and seen on the news, stories of terrible weather conditions happening on just about every continent. The increased number of earthquakes and volcanoes causing untold devastation and loss of life. Then there were the floods and droughts, the mud slides and food shortages. Daily there were reports of war and rumours of other neighbouring countries preparing for all out battles. Of course there were the rumours of the imminent end of the world etched in the not well understood MAYAN Calendar which people were saying foretold world ending scenarios for 12th of December 2012 – yes this very month this very year.
Of course most of us are well aware there have been many psychic‘s (some nut cases) and other groups predicting the coming of the end of the world. Claiming very loudly the time, the date and the place. What they were all doing in my estimation was playing at being God, after all Jesus did tell us in no uncertain terms that even He did not have that information – Only God The Father knew. So when anyone tries to give you a specific time and date you know they are deadly wrong! They have all be wrong so far!!!
The holy books of the world three great monotheistic religions, Jewish, Christian and Muslim all tell of a time when there will be signs in the Heavens and on the Earth (like water turning into blood) and devastation so great that none will be able to live through it – death and destruction will be uncountable. If I read my bible correctly, only a very small percentage of the human race will live through – survive this terrible ordeal, and ONLY then because the Lord God – Jesus Christ will return and His Kingdom – His Reign on Earth will commence – as the evil one – the real underlying cause of these hellish disasters will be thrown into the pit of hell.
It is no wonder this young woman was in fear – so should we all be – this is not going to be something like a blockbuster movie scenario, where it all is over in three hours with an onscreen hero saving the day.
But should she be getting herself into panic mode and migraine mode right now? or would she be far better off teaching her heart to follow Jesus? It has been said: The devil delights in distorting the character of God whenever possible., so we need to turn to His Word and lean on His understanding, not what some youthful frightened friends are passing around as soon to happen doom and gloom scenarios. There is I believe both healthy and unhealthy fear. The unhealthy type breeds distress and maybe even migraines, while the healthy type (from a Christian perspective) will turn us towards God, towards the one – the ONLY ONE who can save us.
The devil wants people to see God as a vengeful tyrant or a divine Santa Claus that can do no harm. Of course, both extremes are false. The same God who destroyed the world in Noah’s day and sent fiery brimstone upon Sodom and Gomorrah, also sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins. (John 3:16) In short, God reveals His love for the human race in a well-documented balance between justice and mercy. Bible history proves that God is longsuffering. He extends mercy to sinners day after day, year after year – until the day comes when extended mercy no longer has any redeeming effect. Then, God justifiably responds in wrath to deal with defiant rebellion.
After all he said follow me…. He also said I will give you rest… and more importantly He said trust in me.
Who do you know that is trustworthy? I mean, really trustworthy. Do you know anyone that you could trust with your life? With your money? With your home? Your new car? If you do, then you know there is a special bond between you. One of the reasons you are able to trust another so much is because of the character of that person. You can’t trust a thief or a liar. It also seems you can’t trust a politician or a bureaucrat. But you can trust someone who has a track record of integrity, honesty, faithfulness, etc. So, in a very real sense, trust (faith) is only as good as the one you put it in.
God is trustworthy. The Bible tells us to trust God. In fact, the middle verse of the Bible is Psalm 118:9 which says “It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes,” (KJV). While we sleep, the Lord is awake. Though we cannot see the path ahead of us with all its blessings and troubles, the Lord sees it and guides us through it with His love. These are truths we need to hear. Has not the Lord been ruling the world before we were born? Most assuredly yes. Will He not rule it in the future? Of course. Since these are both true, then should not all of us Christians be trusting the Lord to rule not only this world but also our lives in the present and the New Life to Come?
End of the World? Doom and Gloom? or a future filled with hope and love….. It all depends on your outlook, on your perspective. You Choose who you will believe in – who you will trust in. To paraphrase Joshua (24:15) For My Husband and I… we will trust in (have faith in) the Lord God, He is our strength and our shield (Ps28:7)
