I would imagine just about everyone with access to a computer, a newspaper, a television set etc, will have heard that a rather large space object is heading into our area of the galaxy very soon. Some name it Planet X, others Nibiru and write of it as if it will cause the end of the world as we know it.
We have also been advised by government agencies that there is nothing to worry about, because this piece of space junk – asteroid etc, will merely pass us by on its ‘fly past’ – sometime between the end of August and the end of November 2011.
Some have spent years writing web pages and books on this forthcoming momentous occasion, which tells of a possible new time in human history. Even more have postulated that this soon to appear space rock will herald in the End Times as recorded in many of the world religious histories. Even some of the Tribal peoples have legends forewarning of this coming event. There is much information / misinformation to be found on the internet.
Does anyone remember the Y2K fear mongering?
The little Church I attend has done little in the way of advising its congregation – one way or the other in regards to this phenomenon. The Pastor did remind us, a few months ago that Jesus told his followers that NO ONE knows when the ‘End Times’ will happen, not even the angels know – only The Father knows. That statement for Christians is of great importance.
So what are the signs of the end of the age? Jesus tells us of some.
As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”
6You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.
9“Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me. 10At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other, 11and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved. 14And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.
Reading the above of course will make us question the present time.
- There will be wars and rumours of wars…… which is happening all around us right now.
- Nation will rise against nation – Civil War! Can anyone say LIBYA?
- Many will come in my name – ah yes the false prophets of which there are many.
- There will be famines and earthquakes – have you looked at the news today? Famine is spreading. Earthquakes and strange weather is increasing daily.
Yet Jesus tells his Disciples (that’s us) this is only the beginning of birth pains….. The Beginning! Assuredly that has to mean there is more to follow.
This tells me that I must be on a constant watch; I must not allow myself to be misled or deceived or become complacent. I must keep my faith strong, but prepared I must be. That can mean physically as well as spiritually….. spiritually is by far the more important though.
In other scriptures Jesus talks about the Wise and the Foolish Virgins. Five were unprepared for when their master arrived in the dead of night – whilst the other five had filled their lamps with oil and were ready for his arrival. Only those who were prepared were invited in!
I believe Jesus was admonishing his Disciples to be ready. It’s not a case of ignoring the signs of the times here, but to be reading them carefully – without fear, but in a state of preparedness for what will eventuate – in God’s own time – whenever that may be. It is not a case of we don’t know so we don’t care.
In 2 Peter 3:10-14 we are told:
But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be burned up. 11 Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12 looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat? 13 Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
"Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming." (Mt 25:13)
30“At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory. 31And he will send his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of the heavens to the other.
Complacency is NOT a trait Jesus advises His Disciples to acquire! Jesus warns us many times regarding spiritual complacency.
“No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,f but only the Father. 37As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.
The World is at war – we are involved in a continuous battle with the forces of evil – this battle will continue to worsen, killing millions of souls UNTIL the return of Our Saviour Jesus Christ at the appointed time. Christians long for this time to arrive!
There will be signs which we should not ignore, but until they happen we will not know exactly what they are – still we must be prepared. Fear of these things is foolish! When we see them happening we ought to rejoice – Our King is returning, evil will be overthrown, Jesus will reign as King forever. The Bible tells us there will be horrific happenings until Christ returns triumphant – but WE KNOW He will reign supreme!
Pray for strength to face whatever comes. Pray for the ability to be able to read the signs of the times. Pray for forgiveness. Pray for your brothers and sisters, that they will welcome Christ’s return and that both you and they will be ready when that day comes – Come Lord Jesus – may we all be prepared. Amen

The first star I see tonight,
I wish I may, I wish I might,
Have the wish I wish tonight.**
